Brazil Faces Uphill Battle to Diversify Diesel Imports
India capitalised on discounted Russian oil after Western boycotts. This strategy reduced its import bill and boosted refinery profits.
President Trump recently imposed an extra tariff of 25% on India, accusing it of funding Russia's war efforts, with potential further sanctions looming.
If pressured to cease Russian imports, India might face higher costs, while Chinese refiners could benefit.

Energy Trading Glossary
Navigate the complex world of energy trading with our concise glossary of essential terms. Understand key concepts that drive global markets.
Refined Oil Products
Petroleum products, such as diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel, derived from crude oil through processing in oil refineries. These are the end products widely used across various industries and for transportation.
Spot Market
A financial market where commodities, like oil or gas, are traded for immediate delivery. Prices are determined by current supply and demand, with transactions typically settled within a short timeframe.
Futures Contract
A standardized legal agreement to buy or sell a commodity at a predetermined price at a specified time in the future. Used by traders for speculation or to hedge against adverse price fluctuations.
Hedging
A risk management strategy employed in commodity trading to offset potential losses from price fluctuations. Traders use various financial instruments to minimize their exposure to market volatility.
Logistics & Supply Chain
The integrated network of processes involved in the efficient transportation, storage, and distribution of energy commodities from source to end-user, crucial for reliable trading operations and market access.
Types of oil tankers
Oil tankers are specialized vessels designed to transport crude oil and refined petroleum products across vast distances. They are crucial to the global energy supply chain, enabling the movement of oil from production sites to refineries and consumption centers worldwide. These vessels vary significantly in size and design, each suited for different types of cargo, routes, and port access requirements.
Aframax Tankers
Aframax tankers are medium-sized crude oil tankers with a Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) typically ranging from 80,000 to 120,000 tons. Their optimal size allows them to serve most ports globally and operate in regions with shallow harbors or restrictions on larger vessels. They are frequently used for shorter to medium-haul crude oil transportation.
Suezmax Tankers
Suezmax tankers are designed to be the largest vessels capable of passing through the Suez Canal when fully loaded. Their DWT usually ranges from 120,000 to 200,000 tons. They are primarily used for transporting crude oil from the Middle East to Europe and North America, offering a vital link in transcontinental energy trade.
VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier)
VLCCs are among the largest oil tankers in the world, with a DWT between 200,000 and 320,000 tons. These massive ships are employed for long-haul transportation of crude oil, typically from major oil-producing regions to large consumption markets, bypassing canals like Suez and Panama due to their size.
ULCC (Ultra Large Crude Carrier)
ULCCs represent the pinnacle of tanker size, exceeding 320,000 DWT and capable of carrying over 2 million barrels of crude oil. While fewer in number due to their immense size and limited port access, ULCCs are used for the longest routes, often transporting crude from the Persian Gulf to distant markets.
Product Tankers
Unlike crude oil tankers, product tankers are specifically designed to transport refined petroleum products, such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and naphtha. They come in various sizes, from small coastal vessels to large long-range (LR) tankers, and are equipped with specialized tanks and pumping systems to handle different types of refined products with strict quality control. These tankers are often built with multiple segregated tanks, allowing them to carry different products simultaneously without contamination. Their cargo handling systems are designed for efficient loading and unloading of volatile and often flammable refined products, requiring advanced safety protocols and specialized handling equipment.
