Energy Trading Glossary
Our concise glossary demystifies energy trading. Understand key concepts driving global markets.
Refined Oil Products
Petroleum products (diesel, gasoline, jet fuel) processed from crude oil in refineries. These end products are widely used across industries and for transportation.
Spot Market
A financial market for immediate delivery of commodities like oil or gas. Prices reflect current supply and demand, with quick transaction settlements.
Futures Contract
A legal agreement to buy or sell a commodity at a predetermined future price and time. Used for speculation or hedging against price fluctuations.
Hedging
A risk management strategy in commodity trading to offset potential losses from price fluctuations. Traders minimize exposure to market volatility using financial instruments.
Logistics & Supply Chain
The integrated network for efficient transportation, storage, and distribution of energy commodities from source to end-user. Crucial for reliable trading and market access.
Oil Tanker Types
Oil tankers are specialized vessels moving crude oil and refined products globally. Essential to the energy supply chain, their diverse sizes suit various cargoes, routes, and port access needs.
Aframax Tankers
Medium-sized crude oil tankers (80,000-120,000 DWT). Optimal for most ports, including shallow harbors, and shorter to medium-haul crude transport.
Suezmax Tankers
Largest tankers able to fully load and pass through the Suez Canal (120,000-200,000 DWT). Primarily transport crude from the Middle East to Europe and North America, linking transcontinental trade.
VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier)
Among the largest tankers (200,000-320,000 DWT), used for long-haul crude transport from major producing regions to large markets, bypassing canals due to size.
ULCC (Ultra Large Crude Carrier)
The largest tankers, exceeding 320,000 DWT (over 2 million barrels). Used for the longest routes, such as the Persian Gulf to distant markets, despite limited port access.
Product Tankers
Designed for refined petroleum products (gasoline, jet fuel, etc.). Vary in size, with specialized tanks and pumping systems for handling different products. Multiple segregated tanks prevent contamination, ensuring quality control and safety.
